DARREL: I have been doing this work in Phoenix for a long time, and I am going to tell you something most safety videos will not: nobody skips safety steps because they are lazy. They skip them because they are in a hurry, it is 112 degrees, and the step has never bitten them before. Today I am going to show you the five routines that are never optional on my crew, exactly the way you will be tested on them. Watch my hands, not just my words.
MAIN (0:30 to 9:30)
Beat 1: The PPE kit and gearing up (0:30 to 2:00)

DARREL: Every Island Breeze truck carries this kit, and keeping it stocked is your job, not the shop's. Walk it with me: two pairs of Z87.1 safety glasses, clear and tinted. Look for the Z87 stamp right here on the frame: no stamp, not PPE. Cut-resistant work gloves. Low-temperature gloves for refrigerant. Insulated electrical gloves with the leather protectors over them. Earplugs and muffs. N95s for attic work. Bump cap, knee pads, headlamp with spare batteries, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, electrolyte packets, and the water cooler.

DARREL: [putting on glasses and gloves] Here is the order that matters. Glasses go on before any panel opens or any hose connects. Gloves match the task: cut gloves for sheet metal, low-temp for refrigerant, electrical rated only when I must work near something live. If you use anything from this kit, you restock it that night. A truck with a missing kit item does not roll in the morning.
Beat 2: Meter safety check and live-dead-live (2:00 to 4:00)

DARREL: Before I trust my life to this meter, the meter gets its own inspection. One: rating. CAT III, 600 volts, printed right here on the face and on the leads. Two: leads. I run my fingers down each one looking for cracked insulation. Three: dial. I confirm it is on volts, not ohms, not amps. A meter set to ohms across a live circuit is a firework in your hand.

DARREL: Now the shutdown. Thermostat off first, so I am not breaking the circuit under load out here. At the disconnect: I stand to the side, turn my face, and pull the block. The block goes in my pocket: that is residential lockout. Nobody can plug this back in without coming through me, and the customer already knows not to touch the panel.

DARREL: Verification. Live: I test a known hot source, and the meter reads voltage, so I know it works. Dead: now the unit, every leg to ground, every leg to leg. Zero, zero, zero. Live again: back to the hot source, meter still reads. That sequence is called live-dead-live, and it is the only thing in this trade that makes a circuit actually dead instead of probably dead. Ten seconds. Never skip it.
Beat 3: Capacitor discharge (4:00 to 5:45)

DARREL: This capacitor can hold a charge for minutes after power is off, and it does not care that the disconnect is in my pocket. First, I look at it. Bulged top, rust, oil: that is a capacitor I treat even more carefully and never put my face over.

DARREL: [holding up the resistor tool] This is a discharge resistor on insulated leads: 20,000 ohms, rated five watts. I bridge HERM to C and hold, one thousand one through one thousand ten. Then FAN to C. Then HERM to FAN. The resistor turns the stored energy into a little warmth instead of an arc.

DARREL: Then I prove it. Meter on DC volts, every terminal pair: under one volt. Now, and only now, I photograph the wiring and pull leads. You will see people short these with a screwdriver. Those people have pitted terminals, cracked capacitors, and a story about the time it went wrong. Be the tech with the resistor and no story.
Beat 4: Ladder setup and roof transition (5:45 to 7:30)

DARREL: Ladder inspection before every climb, four words: feet, rungs, rails, locks. Rubber feet intact. Rungs clean, dry, solid. Rails straight, no cracks: fiberglass only on my crew, because aluminum and overhead service drops do not mix. Rung locks fully seated.

DARREL: Setting the angle: one foot out at the base for every four feet of height. Here is the field check: toes against the feet, arms straight out, and my palms land on the rung at shoulder height. That is 4-to-1 without a tape measure. Top of the ladder runs three feet past the roof edge, and that extension is my handhold for the step-over, which is the most dangerous three seconds of any roof job.

DARREL: Climbing: three points of contact always, belt buckle between the rails always. Notice my hands are empty: tools go up on the hoist line or in the bag on my belt. [at the top, looking up first] And before any of this, I looked up. Power lines get ten feet of clearance from any ladder I set, no exceptions.
Beat 5: Attic entry protocol and the heat plan (7:30 to 9:30)

DARREL: Attics are where Phoenix tries hardest to hurt you. Over a 110 degree afternoon, that attic is 130 to 150. So here is the protocol my crew runs in summer. Attic work goes in the early morning block whenever the schedule allows. Before I go up: headlamp on, backup light in my pocket, N95 on, and somebody, dispatch or another tech, knows I am entering and when. Above 110 ambient: fifteen minutes in, then at least fifteen out, in shade or truck AC with water, before I go back up. Above 115 ambient, attic and roof work is emergency-only with sign-off.

DARREL: [at the hatch, pointing] Inside, my feet touch framing and walk boards only. The drywall between joists holds insulation and nothing else. I clear insulation with my hand before I trust any step, and I know my path back to this hatch before I leave it.

DARREL: The heat plan, and I want you to be able to recite this: water on a timer, about eight ounces every fifteen to twenty minutes during hot work, one gallon minimum on the truck per tech, electrolytes after the second hour of sweating. Know the ladder: cramps, dizziness, then heat exhaustion: heavy sweat, clammy skin, nausea: that ends your work day, full stop. Heat stroke: confusion, hot skin: that is 911 plus immediate cooling, ice to the neck, armpits, and groin while you wait. And watch your partner, because the man overheating is the last one to know it. One more Phoenix rule: first thunder, off the roof, thirty minutes after the last thunder before anyone goes back up. Dust storm on the drive: pull aside, stay alive, lights off.
